HEMS Debrief – Cardiac Arrest Focus. Introduction.

Hello, and welcome back to the Sydney HEMS debrief!

Today, we are launching a mini-series focused on Cardiac Arrest.

Following the application of pre-hospital ECMO for refractory cardiac arrest in Sydney (the PRECARE study), we are taking a deep dive into some of the other global emerging research, management strategies and interventions being considered for cardiac arrest patients.

Join us for this multi-part series as we chat with world leading researchers and clinicians who are at the forefront of cardiac arrest debate, as we consider how we can best serve this diverse and heterogeneous patient group.

Throughout the series, Dr Samuel Bulford (Sydney) and Dr Natalie Kruit (Sydney) will be joined by guests from around the world, covering topics including but not limited to:

  • Ventilation strategies in cardiac arrest
  • Target blood pressures in cardiac arrest
  • How to measure and improve the effectiveness of chest compressions in cardiac arrest
  • Special patient groups (PE, toxicology, pregnancy)
  • And many more…

Guests include Prof Laurie Morrison (Toronto), Dr Paul Rees (London), Dr Hans van Schuppen (Amsterdam), Dr Felipe Teran (NYC) and Dr Tommaso Scquizzato (Milan) to name but a few.

It is time to get excited about cardiac arrest again, so tune in to learn how we can together improve patient outcomes, team performance and contribute to cutting-edge medicine.

Care of EVDs & Temporary Pacing Wires in Retrieval

Some patients require transfer with medical equipment that we may not deal with frequently, or at least in the context of an inter-hospital environment. Examples of such equipment include external ventricular drains (EVDs) and temporary pacing wires.

Our very own Dr Ruan Vlok spoke at the Greater Sydney HEMS Education Day on 9th October 2024 about just this subject, and the talk(s) are now on our YouTube channel. These may be particularly useful revision for anyone undertaking the A(PHRM) training programme or examinations.

Obstetric Emergencies in PHARM

Dr Penny Wilson, GP Obstetrician (@nomadicgp on X), joined us recently at a GSA-HEMS Education Day to discuss key peri-partum emergencies in the context of pre-hospital and retrieval medicine.

The recognition and management of cord prolapse, breech delivery and shoulder dystocia are discussed in her talk, now on our YouTube channel.

For additional revision, or preparation for pre-hospital & retrieval examinations, you may also wish to check out some of the training videos produced by the PROMPT Maternity Foundation charity.
